銀嶺オブジェ / Silver Ridge Object #02

何度かこのWEBサイトの別のセクションで申し上げておりますが、有機物と無機物の融合。それはUNDULATIONのテーマでもあります。こちらにご紹介する無機物。。。かなり極端な格好をした無機物であります。これはハーレーダビッドソン (オートバイ) に使用をされておりますパーツでありまして、ベルトプーリーと称するパーツです。エンジンから生まれる回転力を後輪に伝える為、ハーレーダビッドソンではドライブベルトと称する ( かつてはチェーンが用いられておりました) 伝達装置が使用されておりますが、そのベルトを後輪側で受け止める為のパーツが、このベルトプーリーです。

側面に何やら歯付けの痕跡が残っておりまして、その辺りよりオートバイパーツとしての役目がご想像頂けるかと思います。外周のリング上面にはその歯付けの数だけドリルドの加工を施し、またリングを支えるスポークの部分にもそれぞれ大きさの異なる3点のドリルドを施工。穴の大きさや配置の仕方、また最終的な穴の形状など、このあたりはハーレーダビッドソンのカスタムで培ったノウハウを注ぎ込みました。

真円を描き、また各部の設計に関しては工業製品としての絶対の数値からなるこうしたオートバイや自動車の部品に対しては、得てして美観上のアプローチを試みた所で、思う様な良き結果を得る事は非常に稀なのでありますが、今回は『オブジェ』として成立をするレベルに至ったかと思う次第です。試しに… 均一の空間の中に縦横無尽な表情を見せるエアープランツを配して見ました。また、大輪の赤いダリアの花も良く似合うかと思います。

Harley-Davidson Pulley Object

A radical form of inorganic beauty – part of the UNDULATION series

As we’ve mentioned in other sections of this website, the fusion of the organic and inorganic is a central theme of UNDULATION. What we introduce here is a striking example of the latter—a truly radical piece of metalwork.

This is a belt pulley—a component used in Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In these machines, power generated by the engine is transmitted to the rear wheel via a drive belt (formerly chains were used). The pulley is the part that receives the belt’s force on the rear wheel side.

If you look closely, you’ll notice tooth-like traces along the outer edge—evidence of its original role in power transmission. The upper surface of the ring features drilled holes, precisely matching the number of gear teeth. The supporting spokes also carry a triad of drilled points in varying sizes. The positioning, sizing, and finishing of each hole reflect techniques honed through Harley-Davidson customization—an art in itself.

With industrial components such as this—defined by strict tolerances and mechanical precision—achieving aesthetic transformation is rarely successful. Yet, in this case, we feel it has reached the level of a sculptural object.

To explore its expressive potential, we paired it with an air plant, allowing its wild, organic forms to contrast against the perfectly machined circle. We also found that a single large red dahlia blooms with dramatic effect when placed at its center.
