銀嶺テーブル / Silver Ridge Table

私は昭和39年生まれです。同世代の方々におかれましては、ミシン…何とも郷愁をそそられる事と思います。私の母は裁縫が得意でありまして、若かった頃の母の想い出と言えば、彼女がミシンに向かう後ろ姿を直ぐに思い浮かべる事が出来ます。このミシンの脚ですが、これは “鋳物” でありまして、材質は見る所きっと『鉄』でありましょう。砂型があった事とは思いますが、とにかくその型に高温で溶かした鉄を流し込み、こうした造形物を当時のミシンメーカーは多々造っていた事と思います。

令和の世の中となり、この様な古の製造工程はナンセンスとされる事が常ではありましょうが、優美な曲線を描き内部にも複雑な造形を伴う左右対称のこのミシンの脚の再現しようとした場合、それはやはり、当時と同じ技法や技術に頼らなくてはならず、巡り巡り、時代は変わりつつも、物造りとはやはり、実に手間ひまの掛かる事であると言う事に付かされます。

母からのメッセージ

様々な製品開発を検討した中でひょんな事よりこのミシンに辿り着き、その美しき造形を再確認致した次第です。取り寄せたミシンの脚の殆どは錆び付いており、中には朽ちてしまっていた物もありました。しかし、それはそれ…永らく陽の下に照らせる事の無かったミシンの脚達ではありましたが、私のアイディアには直ぐに賛同をしてくれた様子でありまして、またその長きに渡る経年による劣化の風情の中に、何ものにも替え難き価値をも感じ、それであるならば、その錆も落とす事無く欠損をした部分も可能な限りそのままにして、最終的に銀色の化粧を施しました。そこはかとないこのテーブルの佇まいを眺めておりますと、幼き頃の母の温もりと想い出が蘇り、幼少の頃に持ち合わせていた何とも素直で優しい気持ちにさせてくれます。ミシン脚のテーブルには補助的な意味合いとデザイン的な必要性よる金属加工を施させて頂き、天板には古代神代杉を配しております。

独特の存在感を湛えて生まれ変わったミシン脚のテーブル… 店舗様 / 事業所様 / またご家庭の中で、良きシンボル的な存在になる事と思います。製作過程に置きましては手間暇が掛かります故、多くを造る事は困難でありまして逐一現品限りのご案内となります。是非現物のある内に御検討を賜りたく思う次第です。

個々の商品で銀色の発色や風合いなどが異なる場合があります。また銀膜の表面に極小のピンホールや気泡跡、塗料垂れや釉薬垂れなどが見受けられる場合もありますが品質に問題はございません。陶磁器特有の、また完全手造り品による世界に一つしかない個々の特徴や個性として末長くお楽しみ頂きたく思います。

Sewing Machine Leg Table — A Memory Reborn

I was born in 1964, in the Showa era. For many of us from that generation, the image of a sewing machine evokes a deep sense of nostalgia. My mother was skilled at sewing, and when I recall her from my childhood, I can immediately picture her sitting at the sewing machine, her back turned to me, entirely focused on her craft.

The legs of those old sewing machines were made of cast iron—most likely forged from molten metal poured into sand molds. I imagine that, at the time, sewing machine manufacturers produced many such pieces using this now largely forgotten technique.

Today, in the age of Reiwa, such an outdated manufacturing method might seem inefficient or even unnecessary. But when it comes to recreating those elegant, symmetrical curves and intricately sculpted forms, there is no better way than returning to the original methods. And in doing so, one comes to realize that craftsmanship, no matter the era, is always a labor of time and love.

A Message from My Mother

In the process of developing various product ideas, I happened to revisit the design of an old sewing machine—and rediscovered its astonishing beauty.

Most of the vintage machine legs I sourced were heavily rusted, and some were nearly crumbling from age. And yet, they seemed eager to support my vision. I saw in their long years of wear and weathering a quiet dignity, an irreplaceable character. So I chose to preserve those qualities—leaving the rust untouched, keeping damaged sections as they were—and gave them a final touch: a gentle silver finish.

When I look upon this table now, standing quietly and gracefully, I feel the warmth of my mother return. Her memory, and the kindness I knew as a child, seem to be held in this table’s presence.

The table is reinforced with hand-forged steel components to provide both support and stylistic harmony. The top is made from ancient Jindai Sugi—a sacred Japanese cedar, long buried and beautifully preserved.

A Singular Symbol of Time and Craft

This table, reborn with a distinct presence and story, is sure to become a meaningful symbol—whether in a home, a store, or a workspace. Due to the highly time-intensive process of restoration and assembly, each piece is unique and made in extremely limited numbers. Each is truly one of a kind.

Minute pinholes, air bubbles, subtle drips in paint or glaze may also be visible on the surface of the silver coating. These are not defects, but rather natural characteristics of ceramics and the result of a fully handmade process.
