MANDALA / F50 leaves a strong impression with its silver-toned surface that covers the entire work. Within the MANDALA series, it is a piece in which the presence of the guardian lion-dog motif can be felt most clearly.
For centuries, lion-dogs have stood at the entrances of Shinto shrines, marking the boundary between the sacred and the ordinary. They are believed to ward off misfortune, protect the space, and at the same time steady the hearts of those who stand before them. The powerful composition and swirling forms seen in this work directly reflect that sense of guardianship and the quiet tension embodied by the lion-dog.
The silver applied across the surface serves more than a decorative purpose. It reflects light and its surrounding environment, causing the impression of the work to shift depending on the viewer’s angle and distance.
