「MANDALA / M30号」は、狛犬から着想を得た渦巻き模様のモチーフを、キャンバス一面に描いた作品です。
狛犬は古くから神社の入口に立ち、内と外の境界を示す存在として人々に寄り添ってきました。災いを遠ざけ、場を守りながら、そこに立つ者の心を正す存在。本作に見られる力強い構成や渦巻く造形には、そうした狛犬が持つ守護の性格と、張り詰めた緊張感が色濃く反映されています。
一見すると全体はシルバーの色調が印象的ですが、よく見ると黒の塗料が重ねられ、角度によっては青みを帯びて見える部分もあります。吹き付けられた塗料は、光を受けて宝石のような輝きを放ち、周囲の環境や見る距離によって表情を変えていきます。静止した平面作品でありながら、鑑賞者の動きや時間の経過とともに、作品は静かに変化し続けます。
境界に立ち、守りながらも、その先を見据える存在である狛犬。
本作には、新しい一歩を踏み出すとき、心が前へと動き出す感覚が重ねられています。

“MANDALA / M30” is a work that covers the entire canvas with swirling motifs inspired by komainu, the guardian lion-dogs of Japanese shrines.
For centuries, komainu have stood at shrine entrances, marking the boundary between inner and outer realms, quietly accompanying those who pass through. They ward off misfortune, protect sacred spaces, and at the same time serve to steady and realign the hearts of those who stand before them. The powerful composition and dynamic, spiraling forms seen in this work strongly reflect the protective nature and taut sense of tension inherent in the komainu.
At first glance, the overall silver tone leaves a striking impression. Upon closer inspection, however, layers of black paint emerge, and depending on the angle, subtle bluish hues can also be perceived. The sprayed paint catches the light, emitting a jewel-like brilliance that shifts with the surrounding environment and the viewer’s distance. Though a static, two-dimensional work, the piece continues to change quietly in response to the viewer’s movement and the passage of time.
Standing at the threshold, guarding while gazing beyond—such is the presence of the komainu.
In this work, that presence is intertwined with the sensation of taking a new step forward, a moment when the heart begins to move toward what lies ahead.
